Phoebe Palmer

Phoebe Palmer ( born December 18, 1807 in New York City; † November 2, 1874 ) was an American advocate of holiness and activist for women's rights.

Life

Phoebe Worrell was born in New York City, where her family attended a Methodist church. As a young girl she had a conversion experience. In 1835 she married Walter C. Palmer, with whom she now on the Norfolk Street Church visited. 1835, she began to invite women to events in his home. In 1837 she made the first personal experience with the Holiness movement and identified himself henceforth with this piety style. Soon she was with her husband, one of the driving personalities in this movement within the Methodist Church. Justified by their faith, she was active in social and charitable projects and advocated for prisoners. 1850 was based on their desire toward the Five Points Mission, an organization that supported people in the slums of the city. She has published articles in the Guide to Holiness, the official organ of the Holiness movement. In the 1850s, she undertook with her husband several trips in the eastern United States and Canada to advertise on meetings of the Methodist Church for the Holiness movement. Finally it came in 1857 in the Methodist Church to a wide turn to the Holiness movement. From 1859 to 1863, including during the American Civil War, Palmers spread the teaching of the Holiness movement in the United Kingdom. Upon her return her husband acquired the magazine 's Guide to Holiness, she became the editor. She wrote and published a number of books, the themes of holiness treated and engaged her to bluntly for fair wages of domestic workers and in the temperance movement. They also campaigned for the rights of women within the church and took the view that women should bear witness to their Christian faith.
