Phoxinus

Phoxinus eos

Phoxinus is a genus of the carp family (Cyprinidae ) in the order of the carp -like ( Cypriniformes ), which is found in Eurasia and North America.

Features

The fish of the genus Phoxinus are a little fish with a cylindrical, strong body, pointed pharyngeal teeth and forked tail fin. Your body is covered with numerous, very small scales, only the abdomen between the pectoral fins is usually naked. Along the often incomplete lateral line is a series of square and oblong spots that can coalesce particularly in young animals to form a band.

Reproduction

During the spawning season forms, especially in the males, a showy plumage from the black tinted lower edges, a pattern of elongated dark spots and a coppery luster on the whole body may include. The males have conspicuous develop nodules on the head and a swollen, white edge of the gill cover. Within the genus partially occurs gynogenesis, the formation of asexual progeny through the activation of the egg creating foreign sperm
