Phrynopus is a genus of frogs and toads of the family Craugastoridae. By 2008, the taxon was performed in other species composition within the paraphyletic family of Südfrösche ( Leptodactylidae broader sense ). Former Phrynopus species now found in many other genres of Craugastoridae again, some even in other families ( Microhylidae, Leiuperinae ).
The representatives of the genus are widespread in the cloud forests of the Peruvian Andean region exclusively.
