Physarum

Physarum polycephalum

Physarum is a genus of slime molds from the group of Myxogastria, the largest with over 100 species genus it is. Around two- thirds of the species of the genus are limited in their distribution to the Neotropics.

Features

The often conspicuously colored fruiting bodies are sporokarp to plasmodiokarp, rarely nearly aethalienförmig. A columella may be present or absent. The covered on its surface almost always more or less with Kalkknötchen peridium is a single or double layer, rarely three layers.

The scalp consists of Kalkknötchen, which are connected by transparent, occasionally hollow filaments together and anchored to the peridium and the approach of Sporokarps. A Pseudocolumella may be present or absent.

The Kalkknötchen are always grainy, but can crystallize moisture and drying again.

Dissemination

The genus is distributed worldwide, about two-thirds of the species are, however neotropisch. Many of its species are often found in the areas of distribution.
