The genus is found almost entirely in North America with the exception of Physocarpus amurensis in Northeast Asia. It grows mostly on river banks or similar wet locations.

The Schneeballblättrige Ninebark ( Physocarpus opulifolius ) is a common ornamental shrub in Europe and occurs increasingly as a garden refugee.

System

The genus was first described in 1824 by Jacques Cambessèdes as a section of Spiraea and 1838 established by Constantine Samuel Rafinesque as a separate genus. It is classified in the tribe Neillieae the subfamily Spiraeoideae. We distinguish ten species, including:

  • Physocarpus alternans
  • Physocarpus amurensis
  • Physocarpus bracteatus
  • Physocarpus capitatus
  • Physocarpus glabratus
  • Physocarpus malvaceus
  • Physocarpus monogynus
  • Opulifolius Physocarpus ( Ninebark Schneeballblättrige )
