White Spruce ( Picea glauca )

The white spruce or mold spruce (Picea glauca ) is a species of the genus spruce (Picea ) in the pine family ( Pinaceae ).

The mold spruce is found in Canada, Alaska and the northern United States. In Central Europe, the tree is almost only seen in collections. It is the official state tree of the U.S. state of South Dakota as well as the official provincial tree of the Canadian province of Manitoba.

Description

The white spruce is reached an evergreen tree, the maximum plant height of 50 meters and trunk diameter of 100 centimeters. The bark is gray - brown. The buds are orange - brown and 3 to 6 mm in size. The needles are very uniform in length ( 12 to 13 mm) and almost all are on the top branch.

The white spruce is monoecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( monoecious ). The cones are narrow cylindrical and 5-6 cm long, from the color of copper brown to light orange. The cone scales are smooth and round.
