Pierre Attaingnant

Pierre Attaingnant (also: Attaignant ) (* 1494, † 1552 in Paris) was a French musical score printer, music publishers, booksellers and Composer.

Life

The details of his birth and death year are different, probably he was born in 1494 in northern France and died in 1552 in Paris. The surname is mainly given as Attaingnant, but other spellings such as Attaignant, Ataignant, Atignan (t), etc. are known.

He published many works by French composers, especially chansons. From 1528 to 1552 more than 50 song collections published. Among other things, he published the works of Pierre Passereau. He also published some " dance books ." To 1527/1528, he invented a variant of the printed music that allowed printing in one operation. Each staff sign each note type (see Type) was surrounded by a small segment of the staff lines, so you could put together an entire staff picture like a mosaic.

Attaignant presented per edition 1000 or more copies ago. He was with his version of the music printing a pioneer and role model for many printed music of the 16th and 17th century to 1552 holders of the royal monopoly, which he then lost to Robert Ballard and Adrian Le Roy (Le Roy & Ballard ).

After his death his widow Claude, daughter continued the university bookseller and publisher Philippe Pigouchet to Paris, the business until 1558.
