Pierre Batiffol

Pierre Batiffol ( born January 27, 1861 in Toulouse, † January 13, 1929 in Paris) was a Roman Catholic priest and church historian.

Batiffol studied from 1878 at the Paris seminary of Saint- Sulpice philosophy and theology. After his ordination in 1884 continued his studies at the Catholic Institute and at the École pratique des hautes études continued. He studied at the church historian Louis Duchesne. Subsequently, he studied from 1887 to 1889 in Rome, especially in Giovanni Battista de Rossi, archeology, studied the liturgy and the ancient Christian literature. Special attention he put it on the examination of the Codex Beratinus, the Codex Beratinus II and the Codex Curiensis and some other manuscripts. In 1887 he discovered and described the Codex Vaticanus Graecus -2061.

From 1889 to 1898 and from 1907 to 1929, he served as chaplain at the Paris Ecole Sainte -Barbe. Together with his friend Marie -Joseph Lagrange in 1892 he founded the magazine "Revue Biblique ", which represented the historical- critical method of exegesis of the Old and New Testament. In 1899 he founded also the " Bulletin de littérature ecclésiastique ".

In 1898 he became head of the Catholic Institute of Toulouse.

He set his focus in the field of historical-critical theology, particularly in the area History of Economic Thought. However, his study of the Eucharist in the year 1905 on the Index Librorum was set Prohibitorum. Because of this and because of its hagiographic criticism he lost after the publication of the encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis of 8 September 1907 on charges of modernism his chair.

He went to live in Paris and worked since 1915 as Titulardomherr in Notre- Dame de Paris.
