Pierre Gabriel

Pierre Gabriel (also: Peter Gabriel, born August 1, 1933, Bitche ) is a French mathematician who deals with algebra and homological algebra.

Gabriel was founded in 1961 at the University of Paris with Alexander Grothendieck doctorate (Des categories abeliennes ). He was a professor at the University of Zurich and the ETH Zurich.

Gabriel scored in his dissertation ( published in 1962 in the Bulletin de la Société de France Mathématique ) significant advances in the theory of abelian categories, in particular the categories quasi- coherent sheaves on schemes. He was an employee of Alexander Grothendieck in SGA 1 and 3 (Seminar Géometrie algébrique ).

With Michel Zisman, he developed a generalized localization theory in homotopy theory. With Michel Demazure he wrote a textbook on algebraic groups with emphasis on the perspective of homological algebra. Later he focused on representation theory of finite dimensional associative algebras and quivers. In 1972 he showed that quiver of finite type ( irreducible finite number of representations ) correspond to Dynkin diagrams.

In 1986 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences. 1980/81 he was president of the Swiss Mathematical Society.

His doctoral include Klaus Bongartz, Bernhard Keller and Christine Riedtmann.

Gabriel was also a student of Jean -Pierre Serre and gave its Algèbre locale. Multiplicités out of lectures at the Collège de France in 1957/58.

In 1986 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Berkeley ( representation of finite algebras ).
