Pierre Gilliard

Pierre Gilliard (* 1879 in the canton of Vaud, † 30 May 1962 Lausanne); was from 1904 to 1917 as a teacher and tutor for French at the court of the last Russian tsar, Nicholas II, active.

Life

At the beginning of the 20th century, Pierre Gilliard spent thirteen years at the court of the last Russian tsar as a teacher and tutor of the five children of the Imperial family. A particularly close relationship linking it to the ailing Tsarevich Alexei.

Its privileged position at the court allowed him to share very private moments with the imperial family. The amateur photographer left hundreds of photographs from his time at the court.
