Pierre-Joseph Alary

Pierre -Joseph Alary ( born March 19, 1689 Paris, † December 15, 1770 ) was a French clergyman, philosopher and man of letters.

Life and work

Pierre -Joseph Alary was the son of a pharmacist Barthélémy Alary, ( maistre apoticaire ) from Grasse in Provence before that settled in Paris near the Pont Saint -Michel.

Louis Du Four de Longuerue called, also Abbé de Longuerue (1652-1733), promoted and taught Pierre -Joseph Alary in his youth. Though a committed student and student, you accused him of involvement in the Conspiration de Cellamare. But Philippe II de Bourbon, duc d' Orléans allowed him to defend himself against the allegations themselves.

Later he became prior of Gournay -sur -Marne and sous- précepteur of Louis XV. , A (sub - ) Adel educator or tutor of the king. He was patronized in this position by André - Hercule de Fleury. Alary frequented the salon of Madame de Lambert.

On September 30, 1723 he was elected to the Académie française, whose chairmanship he took over from Jean -Antoine de Mesmes ( 1661-1723 ).

In 1724, Abbé Alary founded with Charles Irenee Castel de Saint- Pierre the Club de l' mezzanine, a discussion group after the English model, who met to 1731. Here were able to share in the free discussion of political, philosophical and economic issues Saturday's up to twenty participants.
