Pierre-René Lemas

Pierre -René Lemas ( born February 23, 1951 in Algiers, at that time the French Département Alger, Algeria today ) is a senior French civil servant and currently serves as Secretary-General ( secrétaire général) Head of the Elysee Palace, the authority of the French President.

Pierre -René Lemas, son of a Pied noire, studied at the Institut d' études politiques in Paris and at the École nationale d'administration (ENA ). On the ENA he belonged to the same Graduation year as François Hollande (Voltaire 1980). Lemas was first sub-prefect in the Dordogne, then in the department of Val -de- Marne. In 1983, he joined the cabinet of the then Interior Minister Gaston Defferre, where he was involved also in the cabinet of Pierre Joxe, especially with the decentralization later. From 1986 Lemas then worked in a variety of functions in different ministries, interrupted by a two- year tenure as prefect in the Aisne department ( 1992-1994). Lemas thereby rose successively in the hierarchy.

From 2000 he was Director General for Administration in the Ministry of Interior. Subsequently, he was appointed by then- Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy as the Prefect of Corsica, where he was to calm the heated political atmosphere between separatists and Republicans after an unsuccessful referendum on expanded autonomy rights in the region. He succeeded but only partially, which led to his transfer to the same function to Lorraine. There he was in 2007, a few days after the rights in the parliamentary elections two mandates had lost in the region called away.

Lemas took over briefly the management of the Government newspapers. He then moved into the Paris municipal administration as director general of the Society for social housing Paris Habitat.

In November 2011 Lemas was at the request of François Hollande Head of Cabinet of the new President of the French Senate Jean- Pierre Bel. On May 15, 2012, he was appointed by François Hollande General Secretary of the Cabinet of the French President. This function is similar to the Head of the Federal Chancellery in Germany.
