Pieter Franciscus Dierckx

Pieter Franciscus Dierckx ( born February 7, 1871 in Antwerp, † September 4, 1950 ) was a Belgian painter.

Life

Pieter Dierckx studied at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts ( Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten ) and the connected university ( Hoger Instituut ) among others Juliaan De Vriendt and his brother Albert De Vriendt and Karel Verlat.

Dierckx was a member of the artist group " The skald " ( De Scalden ).

In September 1896 he was appointed director of the Academy of Art in Temse, where he was also responsible for drawing lessons. In the 230 -year history of Temsener Art Academy Pieter Dierckx is considered one of the most important directors.

As etcher and as a graphic designer, he helped a wide variety of clubs with posters, letterheads, etc. In 1899 he illustrated the "Student Songbook " ( Studentenliederboek ) by Karel Heyndrickx and 1910 some children's stories of the writer Scheltjens Lodewijk ( 1861-1946 ). On the occasion of the 400th birthday of Gerhard Mercator in 1912, he worked on the design of the historic festival parade in Rupelmonde.

During the First World War, he devoted himself to the country life in Temse many paintings, including " potato peeler in the Old Home " ( Aardappelschillers in het Ouderlingengesticht ), " The meager meal " ( Het sober Maal ), " soup kitchen " ( De Soepbedeling ), " reed harvesting " ( Het Plekplein ), "The lace-maker " ( De Kant factory Rochester ), " The clog maker " ( De Klompenmaker ), " The Basket Weavers " ( De Mandenvlechter ), "The Little Kai" ( De kleine Kaai ) ( 1917), " The burnt yard" ( Het Verbrande court ), "The Bahnwärterin " ( de Baanwachtster ), "The weaver's family " ( Het Huisgezin van de Wever ), " the Spinning Wheel " ( Het Spinnewiel ), " fear of God on the heath " ( Godvrucht op de Heide) and others.

Another great part of his artistic work consists of landscapes, particularly forests. Dierckx belonged to the school of Neo-Impressionism, thus the light plays a significant role in his paintings.

Dierckx also felt drawn to history painting and followed the school of Hendrik Leys. On the recommendation of Franz Courtens, the Dierckx as an artist in high esteem, he received from the city of Lokeren a significant order for two historic panel paintings in the local town hall. On a picture board Emperor Charles V can be seen as in 1555 the deputies of the town of Lokeren presents the certificate for the weekly market. The other panel shows the royal couple Albert VII of Austria and Isabella of Spain, in 1613 when she founded the St. Sebastian guild and hand over the certificate for the fair. There are large paintings, which confirm Pieter Dierckx ' championship in the presentation of historical motifs and thus the glory of Leysschen school.

In March 1919 Dierckx returned to Antwerp and opened a paint shop there. In the painting " St. Willibrord preached around the year 700 the inhabitants of the bank of the Scheldt the gospel " (Sint - Willibrordus het Evangelie verkondigend aan de oeverbewoners the Scheldt omtrent het jaar 700) (1939 ) proved Dierckx one more time as a talented painter of historical scenes. This nearly five -meter-wide work hangs in the Holy Hartkerk in length Beeldekensstraat 18 in Antwerp.

With the paintings "Dance of the Sylphs at dawn " ( Dan the Sylphs bij dageraad ) and " Orpheus, the singer with the sweet voice of Thrace " ( Orpheus de zoetgevooisde zanger van Tracie ) ( 1942) Dierckx devoted himself to mythological themes. In the " Orpheus " he has the "Dance of the Sylphs " repeated in the background.

His portraits reveal the hand of a master.

Since 1952, a biennial " Pieter Dierckx prize for painting" will be presented at the Academy of Art Temsener. In 1986, a street was named after Dierckx in Temse.

Pieter Dierckx belongs to the tradition of the great painters of his time, in which it deserves its own and certainly prominent place.
