Pieter Jansz. Saenredam

Pieter Jansz. Saenredam ( born June 9, 1597 Assendelft, † May 31 1665 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch painter. His artistic focus was on the architectural painting.

Career

Pieter Jansz ( oon ) Saenredam was the son of the engraver and cartographer January Saenredam, which was also one of his teachers. From 1612 to 1622 he was a pupil and assistant in the figure painter Pieter de Grebber. After 1623 he worked as a freelance artist. He was probably inspired by his friend, the architect Jacob van Campen, to paint, especially architectural views. His repertoire included mainly exterior and interior views of churches in the northern Netherlands. Saenredam lived for a time in 's- Hertogenbosch, Assendelft, Alkmaar, Utrecht, Amsterdam and Rhenen, however, was mainly active in Haarlem, where he also died in 1665.
