Pingtung City

Pingtung (Chinese屏东 市, pinyin Pingdong Shì, Tongyong Pinyin Pingdong Shì, W.-G. P'ing-tung shih, PEH oē - jī Pin -tong - chhi ), is a city with about 214,000 inhabitants in southern Taiwan (Republic of China). It is the capital of the county, Pingtung.

Location

Pingtung is located on the eastern left bank of Gaoping River, which forms the border between the city of Kaohsiung and Pingtung and about 20 km south empties into the South China Sea. History

Pingtung built in the 18th century after immigrants from Fujian had cultivated the surrounding plain. In 1836, the city walls and gates were built in all four directions. During the Japanese rule over Taiwan was the city the name Heito and in 1933 became a major city (市, Shì ) promoted. She was part of the Takao (Kaohsiung ) Prefecture. In the Republic of China from 1945 to 1951 was Pingtung county-level city and was only incorporated later in the Pingtung County in 1950.
