Pinotage

Pinotage is a red wine grape that originated from the crossing of Cinsault and Pinot Noir (Pinot Noir ). It is mainly grown in South Africa.

The new variety was carried out at the University of Stellenbosch by Professor Abraham Perold Isak in 1924. The name originated from the original name of Perold, " Perold 's Hermitage x Pinot ", which has been marketed since 1959 under the short form " Pinotage ". The Cinsault grape was and is still sometimes called Hermitage in South Africa, hence the name.

Pinotage is early maturing and very sugary. It grows best in hot, dry vineyards. Usually Pinotage wine is made variety, but also blends with the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon are known for their velvety texture and aroma of red berries.

It is interesting to note here is that the Pinotagerebe grows almost exclusively in South Africa. The acreage was there in the year 2007 6.139 ha Small stocks are found in New Zealand, Canada, Brazil, Israel and California. Field trials in Argentina ( → viticulture in Argentina ) and Australia ( → Viticulture in Australia) failed. In 2008, the area under vines was in New Zealand at a slightly decreasing trend at 74 acres. In 2007, the vineyard was still at 88 acres.
