View of the Pirai near the town of Santa Cruz

The Rio Pirai (also: Río Piray ) is a right tributary of the Río Yapacaní in the Bolivian part of the Amazon basin.

Course

The Pirai rises at an altitude of 1,642 m near the town of Samaipata and bears its name from the confluence of the Río Bermejo and Rio Piojeras.

In its course it crosses the province of Andrés Ibáñez, where the metropolis of Santa Cruz is on its right bank. Further downstream the Rio Pirai forms the border between the province and the province Sara Ignacio Warnes and in the further course between Sara and the province Obispo Santistevan.

The name Pirai consists of the two Guaraní words pira ( = fish) and y ( = water).
