Pisa (river)

The Pisa ( German designation Pissek ) is a right tributary of the Narew in Poland. It rises in the of the river Konopka and Święcek fed Roś ( Roschsee ), whom she leaves in Pisz from there connect through the Kanał Jegliński ( Jeglinner channel ) for Śniardwy ( Spirdingsee ) and flows in a southerly direction first by the Puszcza Piska ( Johannisburger Heide), after 19 km in the Podlaskie province, as the eastern border landscape Równina Kurpiowska ( Kurpie ) at some distance to Kolno past up to its confluence with the Narew at Nowogród after a run of about 80 km. Its catchment area is indicated with around 4,500 km ².

Together with Narew, Vistula and San defined the Pisa the border between the German and Soviet spheres of influence, as it was defined in the diplomatic agreements that followed the presentation of the secret protocol to the Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact of 23 August 1939. Along this border Poland was divided in September 1939 for the fourth time.

Name

The name refers to the natural conditions ( Old Prussian " pisa, piss ": deep swamp, bottomless morass, where only small birch and spruce grow ).
