Plectranthus verticillatus

Flowering Swedish Ivy with purple stem axis

Plectranthus verticillatus (syn. Plectranthus nummularius ( Briq. ), Swedish ivy, Moth King or simply harp shrub ) is a plant of the genus harp shrubs ( Plectranthus ) in the mint family ( Lamiaceae).

The plant has shiny green and rounded at the edge of leaves, which may have a purple tint to the blade enclosure that often is also found in Stems and leaf undersides. The upright flower clusters appear white, pale purple or pink and occur sporadically throughout the year, but tends in spring and late autumn.

The name Swedish ivy is misleading: The plant is not a climber and not a close relative of ivy (Hedera ).

Dissemination

The home of Plectranthus verticillatus extends from southern Mozambique to South Africa.

Use as an ornamental plant

Plectranthus verticillatus is a very robust plant that is usually grown as a hanging houseplant, there is growing down in frost-free areas, as well as a ground cover in gardens or walls. In bright places the plant grows very quickly and can withstand even direct sunlight (in moderation ).

Propagation by cuttings is relatively easy and the susceptibility of the plant is very low; an infestation of spider mites but may occur in hard-hit plants.
