Plzeň Region

The Pilsen Region, Czech Plzeň Region, is one of the 14 regions of the Czech Republic. The region lies in the southwest of Bohemia. Council is based in Pilsen. To the west it borders on Germany, followed clockwise regions Carlsbad, Central and Southern Bohemia. With an area of ​​7561 km ², it is the third largest region in the Czech Republic and has 561 074 inhabitants ( 31 December 2006).

Landscape

The region can be divided into the following major scenic areas: Plzeňská pahorkatina ( Pilsner hill country), Brdská Highlands ( the mountains of Brd ), Upper Palatinate Forest and the Bohemian Forest.

Raw materials

The focus of the extractive industries located in the area around Pilsen. Funding is black coal, fire-resistant and ceramic clay and building blocks. Environment

The lowest population density among the districts Tachov ( 37.5 ) and Klatovy ( 45.2 ).

From the perspective of the age structure of the region is among those with the oldest population. The average age in 2005 was 40.4 years, in the district of Plzeň- město even 41.7 years. Since the early 90s, there was a loss of population. As of 2003, the population increases again.

Housing

Communities

The communities form between the regions, the third level of administration in the Czech Republic. The region has 15 municipalities with extended scope ( Czech obec s rozšířenou působností ) and 35 community, charged with municipal office ( Czech obec s pověřeným obecním úřadem ). Districts

The districts ( okres ) do not form an organizational unit of the region and have since January 1, 2003, no more administrative function. Policy

After the election of 17-18. October 2008, the former health minister Milada Emmerová ( CSSD ) was the chief wife of the region and therefore to the first woman ever to project the region. Economy

Education and health

In the region there are 11 hospitals with 3,600 beds. Among the University Hospital in Pilsen 1830 beds (2007) and the Psychiatric Clinic in Dobřany, both of which are among the largest employers in the region.

For the formation provide 255 kindergartens, 204 primary schools, 30 vocational schools, 32 specialized secondary schools, 14 high schools and five institutions of post secondary education.
