Podpraporschtschik, also Unterpraporschtschik (Russian Подпрапорщик, Eng. Transcription sub- Praporshchik or junior praporshchik ) designated in the Imperial Russian army, but also a number of other countries a prominent rank of the rank group of NCOs. The rank was comparable to Podchorunschij ( ru: Подхорунжий ) in the Cossack army until about 1923, but it is also equivalent to Młodszy Chorąży in Poland and a number of other countries. The position according to NATO Rank Code OR -8 would be with comparable.

Historical development

In Imperial Russia the Podpraporschtschik was initially created as a service position with formation of the protecting groups and the introduction of the rank designation Praporschtschik. His service Duties included, among others march backup tasks and preservation of the flag ( ru: прапор / prapor ) in combat. According to the special responsibility that (at that time the lowest officer rank ) was responsible to him as an assistant and deputy Praporschtschiks, only the best, most experienced and most senior lieutenants came to this post, which is why the Podpraporschtschik was regarded as superior of all commissioned officers each.

Podpraporschtschik in the Russian armed forces

In the Russian armed forces, the 17th to the 20th century, the Podpraporschtschik was a non-commissioned officer rank. From 1880 to 1903 this rank graduates of the Infantry Junker schools received before the appointment of an officer. From 1906 to 1917 only longer serving officers have been promoted to this rank in the rule. From 1826 until the introduction of the rank Praporschtschikstellvertreter ( ru: Зауряд - прапорщик / Saurjad - praporschtschik [here in use as a warrant officer ] ) was in 1906 the Podpraporschtschik as the highest officer rank.

Imperial Russian Army

In the Imperial Russian Army from 1883 to 1919 and in the White Army from 1917 to 1923 there were three Praporschtschik ranks.

  • Unterpraporschtschik (Russian Подпрапорщик ), the highest non-commissioned officer of infantry Unterchorunschi ( ru: Подхорунжий ), the highest non-commissioned officer in the Cossack Army

In the branches of cavalry and artillery, there was, however, not these ranks.

Equivalent to Unterpraporschtschik was also the OR8 ranking Guard Marin ( original name: Gardmarin / Гардмарин ) of the Imperial Russian Navy.

With the decline of the White movement and the final defeat of the White Army accounted for all Praporschtschik and Chorunschiränge from 1923 until the year 1971 in line with the tradition in the Imperial Russian Army Ranks Praporschtschik and michman ( ru: Мичман / michman ).
