Poechos Reservoir

The Poechos Reservoir is a medium sized dam on the Peruvian river Río Chira on the border between Peru and Ecuador. Task of the reservoir is the improved use of the water flow in the Chira valley through water storage, irrigation, flow control and power generation.

Location

The Poechos Reservoir is located in the northern part of Peru, on the lower reaches of the rivers Río Chira and Piura River, about 50 km north of the city of Piura, capital of the Piura Region. It is located at 4 ° 40 ' south latitude and 80 ° 30 ' west longitude at an altitude of 98 m above sea level in the district Lancones in the province Sullana, around 30 km from the border with Ecuador.

History

The reservoir was built in four phases.

Phase 1 (1970-1977)

The first phase consisted of the following measures:

  • Construction of the dam Poechos (9 km long, up to 55 m high);
  • Construction of the drainage tunnel at the foot of the dam for flow rates of up to 14 m³ / s;
  • Concrete overflow (400,000 m³ of concrete );

Phase 2 (1978-1985)

The second phase of a closed

  • The upper reaches of Los Ejedos dam with a length of 220 m, a height of up to 20 m and a flow capacity of 3,000 m³ / s;
  • The main channel, which is 42 km long, and allows a flow rate of 45 m³ / s;
  • The protective measures along the banks of the Río Piura ( about 60 km long);
  • The canal system for irrigation of about 35,000 ha

Phase 3 (1985-1997)

The third phase consisted of

  • Is the headwaters dam Sullana of 75 m, a height of up to 12 m and has sluice gates with a total run of 5,000 m³ / s;
  • The headwaters of the North Channel with a total capacity of 25.500m ³ / s over a distance of 56 km to the irrigation of 15,000 ha;
  • The channel south with a total run of 7m ³ / s and a length of 35 km to irrigate 7,000 hectares of land;
  • And around 60 km of dikes along the lower reaches of the Río regulated Chiara.

Phase 4 (2000-2004)

The last phase involved

  • The 12.5 MW Curumuy power plant ( completed in 2000);
  • The 15.4 MW Poechos power plant ( completed in 2004).

Data

The storage capacity of the dam is 1,000,000,000 cubic meters, its catchment area at 14,000 sq km, the maximum depth is 46 m.

The completion of the dam is 49 m high and at the dam crest 9 km long, the discharge is a maximum of 4 cubic meters of water per second.

The original target foresaw the arid Piura Valley to revive economically and to create a modern irrigation for 35,000 ha of agricultural land. Meanwhile, the two hydropower plants supply around 100 GWh Electronoroeste, the licensed energy companies for Northwest Peru. The two Curunuy and Poechos power plants are designed to provide up to 2010 for a 90% emission-free electrification of the country.
