Sullana

Sullana is the capital of the province Sullana in the Chira valley in the coastal plain of northwestern Peru. It has around 175,000 inhabitants ( census 2005).

Location

Sullana located 38 kilometers north of Piura, the capital of the region.

Climate

The province has a subtropical desert climate with an annual average temperature of 20 ° C, between 13 ° C in winter and 37 ° C in summer. Due to the irrigated by the river Chira river valley around the city Sullana is very fertile and offers tropical vegetation: palm trees, banana shrubs and rice fields. In addition Sullana is an important commercial center for the cotton-growing resident.

Population

The city Sullana experiencing strong immigration, but without that it has led to a clearly visible settlement of pueblos & Youth ( slums ), such as in Piura.

The total population of the city was 112 770 in 1981, 147 361 (1993) and currently reaches 175 078 inhabitants ( 2005). In the city Sullana than 40 % of household heads are unemployed or have only a casual employment.

History

The Chira valley has a long history of irrigated farming land. Long before the Spanish invasion settled here the peoples of the Tallanes, the Mochica, Chimu and last of the Incas. This region was selected by the Spaniards, to found the first city in this part of America, the city of San Miguel de Tangarará, on 15 July 1532.

The Spaniards rejected the existing methods of cultivation and founded repartimientos and encomiendas.

Sullana was founded in the late 18th century, on 8 July 1783 the Bishop Baltazar Jaime Martinez de Compañón y Bufanda, and was named El Principe ( The Prince ).

Tourism

Sullana has good transport links to the north, to Piura in the south and in the east by Ayabaca and La Tina at the Ecuadorian border.

In the first week of January, the city celebrates the Feria Internacional de los Reyes.

The Poechos Reservoir 27 km northeast of the city offers recreational sports such as swimming, fishing, water skiing and boating.
