Pogesanians

Pogesanien, Polish Pogezania, the area is one of the twelve Old Prussian tribes. The name can be interpreted as Old Prussian * pa - gudian, which literally means " behind the shrubbery " means and describes a passed with scrub forest region. Most important city is Lidzbark Warmiński ( Heilenberg ).

History

The name first appears in 1287 in religious documents as Pogusania, just as it had probably heard from their Polish allies, the Knights. Later, the terra Pagudinensis region is called. Pogesanien was conquered by Brown Mountain from. 1241 Salvation Mountain was created.

In the 15th and 16th century, the name Hoggerland or stool land is in use for a part Pogesaniens. After fresh beer ( see Literature ), he called in contrast to the lowland the "height".

This name is of Old Prussian " oga " ( Berry) derive and describes an area where wild fruits are plentiful to find.

Legend

According to legend, Hoggo was the tenth son of King Widowuto and received the land "between Borken, Bassaro, Drusino ( out side ) ." According to him, or for his daughter Poggezana it should have been named " Hoggerland " ( stool land ). Hoggo built himself a fortress Tolko ( Tolkemit ) in the district of Morag, which was later called Sheep Mountain. A PRUSSE called Hoggo is not documented.
