Poienile de sub Munte

Poienile de sub Munter (Ukrainian [ Русь ] Поляни / [ Rus ] Polyany or Полонина / Polonyna, Hungarian Ruszpolyána or Havasmező, Reußenau German, Yiddish Vermeziv, Hebrew פאליען -. ריסקווה ) is a city and a municipality in the county of Maramureş in the far north of Romania.

Location

The place is located in the valley at Valea Misica that branches off to the northeast at Leordina from Wischautal. He is about 10 km from the Ukrainian border.

Poienile is the largest community in the Romanian part of Maramures. By far the largest part of the township is forested mountains of the Maramures Mountains, a part of the Carpathians. In the northwest of the massif of Pop Ivan is ( Varful Pop Ivan, 1937 m), in the north of Farcău ( Varful Farcău, 1956 m), in the northeast of Varful Rechita ( 1573 m) and to the south the mountains of Pietrosul - Maramuresului group. The rivers Rica, Socolau, Bardiu and Covasnita unite in the municipality to Ruscova, which drain into the Vişeu ( Wischau ).

History

The oldest written record of Poienile de Sub Munter in 1353 makes the place one of the oldest in the Maramures. Further development in the 14th and 15th century is mentioned by Ioan Mihalyi de Apsa ( " Diplomele maramuresene " of 1411 ), where the settlement was part of the Knesats of Cuhea. Since then, the place called Ruskopolanya or Poiana Rusului, Ruspolyana and Polyana, mainly inhabited by residents of Slavic origin. Until the Second World War, a strong Jewish minority lived in the city (1920 more than 15 %). Nowadays it hosts Ruthenian and Romanian farmers.

Economy

The community is predominantly populated by farmers who own their large plots of lands in the remote region. Even the traditional timber industry serves as a source of income for the local population.
