Pol Plançon

Pol Plancon ( born June 12, 1851 in Fumay, Ardennes, † August 11, 1914 in Paris, actually Paul -Henri Plancon ) was a French opera singer ( bass).

He made his debut in 1877 at the Opéra de Lyon. Later he worked at the Grand Opéra Paris, at the Covent Garden Opera London, Brussels and Nice. In 1893 he was engaged at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. His signature role was Mephistopheles in Charles Gounod's opera "Faust". He appeared in the premieres of the Jules Massenet opera " Le Cid " (1885 ) and "La Navarraise " ( 1894) with. Similarly, in the first performances of Camille Saint -Saens operas " Etienne Marcel " (1879 ) and " Ascanio " ( 1890).

In 1908, he finished his career with a performance of the opera " Martha " by Friedrich von Flotow at the Metropolitan Opera. He settled in Paris and began working as a singing teacher.

Plançons technically well trained voice enabled him, even the most difficult ornaments (especially trills ) to deal with. He was in this art as the leading singers of his time and has remained unmatched by later singers in it. His voice is obtained by numerous recordings.
