1891 Polaire began her career as a singer at the Jardin de Paris. She was the sculptor Rupert Carabin model and several of his works bear their trains. Their extreme wasp waist was her trademark. Quote: When she evening took off her black silk cape yesterday, she did deliberately slowly and deliberately to tighten their audience as long as possible on the rack, as it should be at the unveiling such a unique feature, and the women present held their breath before enthusiasm. Together with the program for the evening a tape measure from 14 inches has been issued, what to read was: This is Polaires waist. And how big is yours?

A song that was written especially for her, began: Quand j'débutais au music-hall, / ma taille tenait dans un faux- col. ( lit.: When I started in the music-hall, fitted my waist in the collar of a shirt men ), a statement that had some Galanterien result, George Herriot eg offered her a diamond-studded belt, if they would make this claim at his shirt collar true. Before her appearance at London Coliseum in 1915 asked her manager William Hammerstein one of their 14-inch corsets in a showcase in a corner of the theater and told the press that this waist was a gift from the gods.

In her autobiography ( Polaire par elle même, 1933) she writes that her waist was inherently so narrow that less wasp- like appearance in the photos from the period before their big career began, she explained with the fact that she had padded up to look human-like.
