Polish European Union membership referendum, 2003

The referendum in Poland joining the European Union was held in Poland on 7 and 8 June 2003. With a turnout of 58,85 % 77,45 % of the voters voted for the accession of Poland to the European Community.

Background and results

At the meeting of the European Council in Luxembourg in 1997 to start accession negotiations with Poland and other Eastern and Southern European countries, 9 it was decided. These negotiations were on 12-13. Completed December 2002. On 16 April 2003, the Accession Treaty, which entered into force on 1 May 2004, signed by the EU and the 10 accession candidates. The Polish government allowed a referendum on the question of accession perform. The question asked was:

" Czy wyraża Pan / Pani zgodę na przystąpienie Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej do Unii Europejskiej? "

" Do you agree with the accession of the Republic of Poland to the European Union? "

With a turnout of 58.85 % ( 17,586,215 voters ) voted in 77.45 % ( 13,516,612 ) with "Yes" and 22.55% ( 3,936,012 ) with "No". In order for the referendum was adopted.
