Pondoland

Pondoland (also Mpondoland ) was a territory of the former British protectorate Kaffraria in the Cape. Today the area is part of the South African province of the Eastern Cape.

Geography

Pondoland is located in the modern state of South Africa, between Tembuland, Ostgriqualand, Natal and the Indian Ocean. Pondoland was 9267 km ². The country is bordered by the rivers Umtata and Umtamvuna and crossed by Umzimvubu and many other rivers. There are in this area two harbor towns, Port St Johns and Port Grosvenor.

History

The number of Mpondo that of many small tribes ( Amakwela, Amanyati, Amalana, Amanzi ) existed, was approximately 150,000. Above the elongated deltas of Umzimvubu was the Fort Harrison.

1885 took the Baden Lieutenant Emil nail the attempt to establish a German colony in Pondoland. Nail acquired 400 km ² of land from chief Umquikela. A German Pondoland Society ( DPLG ) was launched. Given British claims but denied the German Empire 's status as a reserve.

Instead, the Pondoland was placed under British protectorate in 1885 and annexed by Britain in 1894.

1959/1960 an insurrection in Lusikisiki was bloodily suppressed by the government in the territory of the former Pondoland. There were several deaths.
