Ponneri (Tamil: பொன்னேரி Ponneri [ pon ː e ː ɾi ] ) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 31,000 inhabitants ( 2011 census ).

Ponneri is located approximately 40 kilometers north of Chennai (Madras ) in Tiruvallur district on the river Arani Nadi inland from the coast of the Gulf of Bengal. The border of the neighboring Federal State of Andhra Pradesh is around 24 kilometers away. Ponneri is the capital of Ponneri taluks.

Ponneri is located on the railway line from Chennai to Nellore and from the northern line of Chennaier suburban train (Chennai Suburban Railway) operated. The National Highway 5, which runs parallel to the east coast of Chennai from north leads, approximately six kilometers west past Ponneri.
