The Ponziani - opening starts with the trains

For the first time it was analyzed at the beginning of the 18th century by its namesake, the Italian chess player and writer Domenico Lorenzo Ponziani. White plans with 4 d2 -d4 to take dominion over the center of the chessboard with the Ponziani - opening after 3 c2 - c3 in the next train. A disadvantage of the Bauer train to c3, however, is that the knight on b1 pending can not enter his usual development field. The black counterplay based accordingly on the attack of the farmers e4, either with 3 ... d7 -d5 or 3 ... Ng8 - f6. After further analysis by Howard Staunton in the late 19th century the interest took off in this opening. Today, it is only very rarely used, and how not played so well in grandmaster games.
