Pope Hormisdas

Hormisdas (also: Hormisda; * in Frosinone, Campagna di Roma, Lazio, † August 6 523 in Rome) was July 20, 514 until his death, Bishop of Rome and is run by the Catholic Church as Pope.

Life and work

Saint Hormisdas was a widower and the Roman archdeacon of his predecessor Symmachus, when he was elected bishop of Rome. His son was as Silverius later also bishop of Rome.

One of the first concerns of the bishop was to remove the last traces of the Laurentian schism from Rome and attributed the remaining apostates in the church. Most of his pontificate was concerned with the healing of the schism ( Akakianisches Schism ), which had existed between East and West since 484 and was based on the excommunication of Acacius of Constantinople Opel under charge of Nestorianism. 519 was the schism with the help of a profession of faith, which is called the Formula of Hormisdas ( formula Hormisdae ) ended and the Church of Rome, united with that of Constantine Opel again. Hormisdas had the letter sent to the Patriarch Timotheos I. 515, 519 and sent it to his successor, John II Kappadokes accepted back.

There is also a correspondence between Hormisdas and Patriarch Epiphanius of Constantinople Opel, the successor of John Kappadokes, obtained in which it comes to the final settlement of the schism.

He is the patron saint of the stable boys and grooms, as well as the city of Frosinone. The Catholic feast day is August 6.
