Poppo, Duke of Thuringia

Poppo of Thuringia is attested of 878 / 880-906 as Count popularly field. He was 880-892 Margrave of Sorbenmark and was referred to in his deposition 892 as " dux Thuringorum ", Duke of Thuringia.

He was the younger son of Count Poppo (I.) in Saalgau and the brother of the princeps and dux militiae Austrasiorum Heinrich, the military commander of the Emperor Charles III. and thus one of the most important members of the family of the elderly or Frankish Babenbergs, who was one of the fundamental pillars of Charles the Fat, and thus in contrast to Charles's successor, Arnulf of Carinthia.

He had two sons:

  • Daughter, who married a Count Wilhelm, probably William of Weimar- Orlamünde.
