Porcupine is a settlement on community- free area, which is conducted for statistical purposes as a census-designated place (CDP). The place is located in Shannon County in the U.S. state of South Dakota.

Geography

Porcupine is located at 43 ° 15'45 " north latitude and 102 ° 20'52 " west longitude. The City of Rapid City is located 120 kilometers to the northeast. In each case, 25 kilometers to the south lie the Pine Ridge and the border with the state of Nebraska. The historical site of Wounded Knee is only five kilometers away.

History

The name of the place goes back to the North American porcupine ( Erethizon dorsatum ) (English Porcupine ), the numerous found in the area.
