Except for the road connection exists since 1913 a tram line from Sóller to Port de Sóller, which follows the course of the old road, but invested in their route by orange and lemon groves. This reached the place east of the beach of en Repic, which is located on the south side of the Badia de Sóller. At Port de Sóller Port next to the center, it includes the settlements of Bella Vista and sa Talaia in the north, it Través south of the harbor and Can Joi in the southwest and sa Muleta in the West.

The Badia de Sóller provides the only sheltered harbor of the north west coast of Majorca, between Port d' Andratx and Port de Pollença. So Sóller could develop to the main town of the region in the Serra de Tramuntana. The Port of Soller, Port de Sóller, was built at the northeast side of the bay, protected from the north-west winds by the Raco de Santa Caterina Peninsula. To the local estuary of the torrent Torrent de sa Figuera was the core settlement with the parish church of Sant Ramon de Penyafort. After the construction of the tram from Sóller, the settlement began to expand southward, so that today the entire east and south sides of the bay is built up behind en Repic at the mouth of Torrent Major.

History

The coast at the Badia de Sóller was already in the Chalcolithic period, which is referred to as Mallorca Preceramic period, inhabited by people. Traces of this settlement 5200-2700 BC Muleta were found in sa on the west side of the bay. Also the Phoenicians and Greeks talked proven bases at Port de Sóller, under the Romans, was established here a trading port. In the period of Arab rule from the year 902 AD, the surrounding land were cultivated by irrigation systems and there were large areas created olive groves. From this era, the name derives Suliar ( " Valley of Gold " or " shell" ) for the area of Sóller. After the conquest of Mallorca by the Moors by King James I in 1229, the country was divided to the followers of the king in the valley of Sóller.

In the late Middle Ages Mallorca was often the target of North African corsairs plundered the coastal settlements and their inhabitants sold into slavery. In one of these raids in 1542 the building was built in 1280 the small church of Santa Caterina d' Alexandria was destroyed. The chapel was rebuilt in 1550. A still known attack on Port de Sóller took place in early May 1561. A fleet of 23 Galioten was coming from Algiers and spotted on May 10 in front of Ibiza in the early hours of May 11, 1561 the Bay of Sóller. The roughly 1700 to 1800 -strong troops of the Muslim privateer Uludsch Ali ( Otxali / Occhiali ), after the Battle of Lepanto (1571 ) known as Kilic Ali Pasha, occupied the area around the harbor. Under the leadership of the captain of Sóller ( Sóller Capità ), Joan Angelats, the pirates were with support from Bunyola, Santa Maria and Alaro defeated at Port de Sóller still on May 11 of the Sollerics and forced to flee. In memory of the victory in mid-May is the festival celebrated it Firó in Port de Sóller today. It was not until 53 years later, the defense tower Torre Picada was above the bay of Soller. The 1614 to 1623 built tower was part of the group consisting of 85 observation towers and coastal defense of the island.

From the 17th to the 19th century, the valley of Sóller developed into an important production area for fruit, vegetables and citrus fruits. The agricultural products of the region were shipped through the port of Sóller to France and to the Spanish mainland. The importance of the port was cut off from the remoteness of the location of Sóller on the northwest coast, by the mountain range of the Serra de Tramuntana from the other parts of the island. This changed with the construction of the Sóller Railway (Tren de Soller ) 1905-1912. You was inaugurated on April 16, 1912 and served next to the passenger transport especially the transport of agricultural products of Sóller in the island's capital, Palma. The disadvantage of the reduced freight volumes for the port after the completion of the rail link is now more than offset by another construction project at that time. Inaugurated on October 11, 1913 tram connection ( tramvia de Sóller ) from the station in Sóller to Port de Sóller is a tourist attraction that is unique in the Balearic Islands.
