Porta Tiburtina

The Porta Tiburtina, now Porta San Lorenzo ( also Porta Taurina ), is a goal of the Aurelian Walls of Rome. Through the gate ran the Via Tiburtina, Via Tiburtina Antica today after Tibur (modern-day Tivoli) leading road. Its modern name is the gate of the Basilica of San Lorenzo fuori le mura.

The Porta Tiburtina goes back to a monumental arch of travertine from Tivoli, crossed with the three aqueducts, the Aqua Iulia, Aqua Marcia and Aqua Tepula, the Via Tiburtina. The arch was built in 5 BC under Emperor Augustus. In 271 AD, began building the Aurelian Walls, the sheet was included in the course of the Wall, flanked by two towers, and thus to the city gate.
