Portland Terminal Company

The Portland Terminal Company is a former railway company in Portland (Maine). It operated connecting tracks and the port rail in the Portland metropolitan area.

History

After Portland was opened on all sides by railways, was the port city facing the problem that almost each of the railroad companies had its own terminus in the city, see railway stations in Portland ( Maine). Passengers who only wanted change in Portland had, in part to cover long distances through the city center. Therefore, the city decided to build a common central station for all trains. The Portland Union Station Railroad Company was established on 15 February 1887. The new station was built on the route of the Maine Central Railroad and was opened in 1888.

The company built connecting tracks from the common terminal station of the Boston and Maine Railroad and the Maine Central Railroad south of the city center and the Grand Trunk Railway station at the port. The trains of the Portland and Ogdensburg Railway used the route of the Portland and Rochester Railroad with with the opening of the new station between Cumberland Mills and Deering Junction and drove from the north to the central station a.

As of March 23, 1911, the operation was held under Portland Terminal Company (also Portland Terminal Railroad ) and was led by the Maine Central Railroad. From 1933, the Boston & Maine and operated the Maine Central railway under joint director. 1965 the last passenger train left Union Station after the reception building had already been demolished in 1961. In its place now stands a shopping center. With the acquisition of the Boston & Maine and Maine Central by Guilford Transportation in the early 1980s, the Portland Terminal Company went to this company and was dissolved.
