Parish

Portmore is a coastal city in southern Jamaica and the third largest city on the island. Although independent, Portmore is often regarded as a suburb of the capital, Kingston just a few kilometers away.

After 1655 to Englishmen settled in the previously uninhabited by Spaniards area. In the late 17th century, lived about 2000 Europeans, 2000 slaves and 400 soldiers in the city. Until 1900 the church could hardly grow. In the late 1960s, the West Indies Home Contractors ( WIHCON ) systematically built thousands of residential houses and gave the city to its present appearance. This was done to entgegengewirken of overpopulation in Kingston. Many workers leave every morning from Portmore via the Causeway Bridge in the capital. Only in 1997 was Portmore municipal law. 2001 another large construction project was begun. Greater Portmore to complete the project from the 1960s and are a further 16,000 houses available.

In the city there is the only racecourse of Jamaica.
