Portorož

Portorož (Italian Porto Rose, of Italian postage = port, rose = roses, .. Slovenian roža = flower, dt veralt Rose Harbour ) is a district of the municipality of Piran and a spa resort with 2,800 inhabitants on the Slovenian Adriatic coast ( Slovenian Riviera ) in Istria.

Description

The capital of Slovenian tourism does not have a historical core. The townscape is dominated by the two large hotel complexes Lifeclass Hotels & Spa Hotels and St. Bernardin, the Casino and the fenced marina ( the marina ). The principle paved or rocky coast is compensated by the thermal spas in the hotels and a small artificially created sand beach in the center.

Attractions

  • A historic old town has the adjacent Piran.
  • Near the village there are also the Sečovlje and Portorož Airport.
  • " Forma Viva " is a green, passing with trees exhibition park with monumental stone sculptures in the open air on the ridge of the Seca peninsula. Since 1961, the vast abstract sculptures made exclusively Istrian stone originated there continuously within the international sculptor meeting Forma Viva. It offers itself from there extensive views of the bay from Porto Rose. The entrance into the spacious open-air gallery is free.

Traffic

Between 1909 and 1912 the city was the end point of the track rail lots Piran - Portorož, one of the first trolleybus companies in Austria. This in turn was bound in Portoroz with the former local railway Trieste- Parenzo. From 1912 to 1953 ran between Piran and Portoroz on five kilometers a tram with the unusual trams track width 760 mm.
