Praia do Norte is one Freguesia (municipality ) in the district of Horta on Faial Island in the Azores in Portugal.

The municipality is located in the northwest of the island and comprises the main town in about 300 m height at the inselumrundenden national road EN -1 and Faja da Praia do Norte on a coastal plain to the sea. The place has a beach of dark volcanic sand.

History

The already mentioned place in 1567 was in 1672 completely destroyed during the eruption of Cabeço do Fogo volcano. Also from the earthquake that accompanied the emergence of the Vulcão dos Capelinhos in the years 1957 and 1958, Praia do Norte was directly affected. The village church Igreja de Nossa Senhora das Dores was 1960/1961 rebuilt to replace the fallen predecessor.

On 9 December 2005 the container ship CP Valour ran in front of Praia do Norte due. The Baía On the way from Montreal to Valencia had da Praia do Norte (also Baía da Ribeira das Cabras ) started to lying to fix an engine failure at anchor. As all attempts to get it going again failed, the ship had to be abandoned and scrapped on site. When towing the wreck this sank in September 2006 about 25 miles north of Faial.
