Prekmurje

  • Prekmurje ( 5) is one of the five historical regions of Slovenia.

Prekmurje ( Prekmurje German, Hungarian Muravidék ) is a historical region in the extreme north -eastern Slovenia. The region has an area of ​​947.8 km ² and includes the hilly Goricko, the levels Ravensko and Dolinsko, and the western part of the mountainous Lendavske Gorica.

The part of the country is named after the river Mur, which once divided the Slovenes living in Hungary from the Cisleithanian in Lower Styria. The economic and cultural center of Prekmurje is today the city of Murska Sobota.

Geography

The region borders Austria ( triangle 387 m), Hungary and slightly to Croatia. In the north and east dwells a Hungarian minority, which has a right to a seat in the national parliament. It is the poorest region of Slovenia.

The region is a hilly area with altitudes between about 150 and 400 m and provides a morphological continuation of Eastern Styria's hill country dar. The main river is the Ledava, the two main roads run in a north-south direction: those in the west running parallel to the Styrian border and at Bonisdorf to the Austrian Burgenland, the other bends in the middle of the country ( Petrovci - Šalovci ) eastwards to Hungary from.
