Prince Baudouin of Belgium

Baudouin Léopold Philippe Marie Charles Antoine Joseph Louis of Belgium ( born June 3, 1869 in Brussels, Belgium, † January 23, 1891 ) was a Prince of Belgium and second in the Belgian throne ( heir apparent ) after the death of Crown Prince Leopold.

Life

Baudouin was the eldest child of Prince Philippe of Belgium, Count of Flanders (1837-1905) from his marriage to Princess Marie (1845-1912), daughter of Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen.

After the death of the only son of King Leopold II of Belgium in 1869, his father was heir to the throne and Baudouin, the second in the Belgian throne. To emphasize the succession claim and to connect the two branches of the family, a marriage between Baudouin and the youngest daughter of King Leopold II Clémentine was planned. But Baudouin felt no feelings for the princess and also Baudouin mother locked herself against the connection.

Baudouin lit at the bedside of his sister Henriette, whom he was very close, with a cold, and finally died at the age of 21 in the Brussels Regentschapshuis from an injury he had suffered in a duel with the husband of his mistress. He is buried in the Church of Our Lady in Laeken. The throne fell to his younger brother in 1909 when Albert I. ascended the Belgian throne.
