Prince Christopher of Greece and Denmark

Prince Christopher of Greece and Denmark, called " Christ " (* 29 Julijul / August 10 1888greg in Pavlovsk, .. † 21 January 1940 in Paris, France ) was a member of the House of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg.

Life

Prince Christoph was the youngest of eight children of the Greek King George I (1845-1913) and his wife, the Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna Romanova (1851-1926), daughter of the Russian Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich Romanov and Princess Alexandra of Saxe- Altenburg. He was a great-grandson of Tsar Nicholas I and grandson of the Danish King Christian IX.

Christoph spoke fluent Greek, German, English, Danish, Russian, French and Italian. The siblings spoke Greek to each other, with parents but English. He studied in Germany at the University of Heidelberg, where he joined the Corps Saxo - Borussia joined. He was offered the throne of Portugal, Lithuania and Albania, but he refused because of the royal duties.

With its British cousin ( second degree ) Lady Alexandra Duff ( 1891-1959 ), the eldest daughter of Princess Louise, in 1910 he had a relationship. His parents and grandparents of the bride were against marriage. 1913 married Lady Alexandra in St. James 's Palace Prince Arthur of Connaught. In 1914, Christopher became engaged to the wealthy American widow, Nonnie May " Nancy " Leeds, but due to complications the marriage was delayed by six years. The wedding took place in Vevey on 1 January 1920. After the marriage the bride took the name "Anastasia". With her considerable fortune she supported the Greek royal family during their exile in the twenties. Nancy died less than three years after the marriage in 1923 of cancer; their money and possessions were divided between her son from his second marriage, William Bateman Leeds, Jr. (1908-1971), and her husband. Her son married the niece of his stepfather in 1921, Grand Duchess Xenia Georgievna Romanova ( 1903-1965 ).

Prince Christoph married in 1929 in Palermo Princess Françoise Louise Marie Isabelle of Orléans ( 1902-1953 ), daughter of the Duke of Guise and Jean Pierre Princess Isabelle d' Orléans. The couple had one son, Prince Michael of Greece ( born January 7, 1939 in Rome).

Prince Christoph and his second wife are buried in the Royal Cemetery at Tatoi.
