Prince Edward of Saxe-Weimar

Eduard of Saxe -Weimar- Eisenach ( born October 11, 1823 in Bushy Park, † November 16, 1902 in London) was Prince of Saxe- Weimar -Eisenach and British Field Marshal.

Life

Edward was a son of the Duke Bernhard of Saxe- Weimar -Eisenach (1792-1862) from his marriage with Ida (1794-1852), daughter of Duke George I of Saxe- Meiningen. His mother's sister was Queen Adelaide of Great Britain.

Edward married November 27, 1851 in London in morganatic marriage Lady Augusta Gordon - Lennox ( 1827-1904 ), daughter of Charles Gordon - Lennox, 5th Duke of Richmond. The closed inclination of marriage had the express benevolence of Edward's father. The Grand Duke of Saxe- Weimar -Eisenach gave the bride the title of " Countess of thorn castle " and Queen Victoria the title " Princess of Saxe -Weimar Eduard ". The marriage remained childless.

Edward lived almost all his life in the UK. He joined in 1841 in the British Army in the Crimean War and took part in several battles. He became colonel of the 1st Life Guards and adjutant of the British Queen. From 1870 to 1876 he was Commander of the Home District, 1878-1883 for the Southern District and 1885-1890 Commander of the Forces in Ireland. In 1897 he was elevated to the rank of Field Marshal. He was the recipient of numerous awards and died of appendicitis.
