Prince John August of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg

Johann August of Saxe- Gotha -Altenburg ( born February 17, 1704 Gotha; † May 8, 1767 in Roda ) was a prince of the family of Wettin ernestinisch - by- line Saxe-Gotha -Altenburg and was Reich Field Marshal.

Life

Johann August was the son of Duke Frederick II of Saxe- Gotha -Altenburg (1676-1732) and his wife Magdalena Augusta (1679-1740), daughter of Prince Karl Wilhelm von Anhalt- Zerbst and his wife, Princess Sophia of Saxe- White rock, born.

He entered 1725 in the Imperial service and fought in Italy and Hungary. In the battle of Grocka he was wounded and then spent some time to relax in Altenburg. Then he took his service again and fought in the War of Austrian Succession in Silesia, Bohemia, Bavaria and the Rhine. He eventually became Reich Marshal and received a dragoon regiment.

He and his family lived in Roda Johann August, where he was visited by Frederick the Great, shortly before his death. He was winner of the White Eagle.
