Prince Louis, Duke of Nemours

Louis Charles Philippe Raphael d' Orléans, duc de Nemours (* October 25, 1814 at the Palais Royal in Paris, † June 26, 1896 in Versailles) was Duke of Nemours, as well as a French lieutenant general and brigadier general.

Life

The Duke of Nemours was the second son of the Duke of Orléans, later King of the French Louis -Philippe and Maria Amelia de Bourbon- Sicily.

After his father the son in 1831 is transmitted crown of Belgium was out of consideration for the other powers, especially Britain, rejected, Louis took the two French expeditions to Belgium and 1836 in Algeria in part on the train crashed against Constantine. In 1837 he commanded as Brigadier the siege corps of Constantine and was then appointed lieutenant general.

After the death of his elder brother Ferdinand Philippe in 1842 he quarreled with his widow to an eventual regency for his minor nephew. This measure seemed necessary due to the high age of King Louis -Philippe, but then did not come to fruition.

From character strict and cold, it was little popular with the French. On February 24, 1848, he accompanied the Duchess of Orléans on their passage to the Chamber of Deputies and then fled with his family via Boulogne to England, where he remained until 1871. Thereafter he lived in Paris.
