Prince Ludwig Gaston of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha

Louis Gaston Clemens Maria Michael Gabriel Raphael Gonzaga of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha ( born September 15, 1870 in Ebenthal (Lower Austria ), Ebenthal Castle, † January 23, 1942 in Innsbruck ) was a prince of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha from the Catholic side line Koháry, Austrian officer, and son of King Ludwig III. of Bavaria.

Life

Louis Gaston was the youngest of four sons of Prince Ludwig August of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha (1845-1907), from his marriage with the Infanta Leopoldina of Brazil, daughter of Emperor Peter II of Brazil. The prince came to the Austrian Ebenthal Castle, ancestral seat of his family Koháry Coburg branch, and grew up in Brazil, where at that time still ruled his imperial grandfather. 1889, the overthrow of the Brazilian monarchy, Louis Gaston fled with his family to Europe.

He went to Wiener Neustadt in the Theresa Military Academy, which he successfully completed in 1892. Thereafter, he was transferred as a lieutenant to the 4th Tyrolean Kaiserjäger Regiment to Lienz. On May 1, 1900, he married Princess Mathilde of Bavaria ( 1877-1906 ), the daughter of former Bavarian heir to the throne and later King Ludwig III. of Bavaria. At that time ruled the Kingdom of Bavaria still whose father Prince Regent Luitpold, which hosted the wedding of the young couple. Princess Mathilde was his favorite grandchild. She died in 1906 of a lung ailment in Davos, Switzerland, leaving her husband with two small children.

Louis Gaston of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha was the holder of the Grand Cross of Saxony- Ernestine House Order.

His daughter from his first marriage, Mary Immaculate of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha (1904-1940) was heavily involved in the Catholic Church and initiated in the German-speaking countries the " communion of prayer in support of the professional priest " from which the Pontifical Society for Vocations developed.

The Prince's brother, August Leopold of Saxe -Coburg and Gotha (1867-1922), was among Brazilian monarchists as a pretender to the throne.

From his marriage with Matilda of Bavaria had two children:
