Princess Adelgunde of Bavaria

Adelgunde Charlotte Auguste of Bavaria ( born March 19, 1823 in Würzburg, † October 28, 1914 in Munich) was a Bavarian princess.

Life

Adelgunde was a daughter of King Ludwig I of Bavaria and Princess Therese of Saxe- Hildburghausen.

They married on March 30, 1842, Archduke Franz V of Austria -Este, a son of Archduke Franz IV of Austria -Este and Maria Beatrice of Savoy, Princess of Savoy, in 1842. Franz V was the last reigning Duke of Modena - Este, who had to resign in 1859 due to the Italian unification.

After his death in 1875, she returned to Bavaria, where her brother Luitpold 1886 the regency took over. Adelgunde was as " Aunt Modena " the gray eminence at court, had great influence on her brother and took over all the family and social obligations of a first lady in the state. Besides, they also promoted the influence of the Viennese court in Munich.

Adelgunde Auguste died in 1914 at age 91 and is buried in the crypt Ferdinand in Vienna.
