Princess Augusta of Cambridge

Caroline Augusta of Cambridge, Princess of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover; (full name: Augusta Caroline Charlotte Elizabeth Mary Sophia Louise ) ( born July 19, 1822 in Hannover, † December 5, 1916 in Neustrelitz ) was a granddaughter of the British King George III. and by marriage Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg -Strelitz.

Life

Caroline Augusta was the eldest daughter of Adolphus Frederick, 1st Duke of Cambridge, and Viceroy of Hanover ( 1774-1850 ) and his wife Princess Augusta of Hesse ( 1797-1889 ), daughter of the Landgrave Frederick of Hesse -Kassel- Rumpenheim and the Caroline Polyxena of Nassau- Usingen. She grew up in Hanover, where her father served as governor-general, and was used from 1831 as viceroy of Hanover.

On June 28, 1843 Caroline Augusta married her cousin in London ( first degree) Hereditary Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Mecklenburg -Strelitz ( 1819-1904 ), son of Grand Duke George and the Princess Marie of Hesse- Kassel. The marriage had two sons, of whom only Prince Adolf Frederick survived.

Although Augusta Caroline spent most of her life in Germany, she held private contacts with the royal family still maintained. After her mother's death († 1889), she inherited a house near the Buckingham Palace, where she spent part of the year until her health made ​​her unable to go on trips.
