Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk

Henry Fitzalan - Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk KG, GCVO, VD, PC ( * December 27, 1847 in London, † 11 February 1917 Arundel ) was a British nobleman and politician.

Life

Henry Fitzalan - Howard was born on December 27, 1847, the eldest son of Henry Fitzalan - Howard, 14th Duke of Norfolk ( 1815-1860 ), and his wife Augusta Lyons ( 1821-1886 ) in London. Until the death of his father he was the courtesy title of Earl of Arundel.

Henry Fitzalan - Howard was how the entire family of the Earls of Arundel, Roman Catholic. After the age of Catholic Emancipation in 1829 in the United Kingdom included the consolidation and social integration of British Catholicism to its key policy priority. He gave considerable sums for the construction of new Catholic churches, especially for the later cathedrals of Southwark, Arundel, Sheffield and Norwich, also in London for the Oratorianerkirche and the Newman Memorial. From 1898, he was with Charles Tindal Gatty the hymnbook Arundel Hymns out to the Pope Leo XIII. a personally held preface contributed.

He died on February 11, 1917 in Arundel, the ancestral home of his family. He was married twice, his son Bernard from his second marriage to Gwendolyn Constable - Maxwell, 12th Baroness Herries of Terregles ( 1877-1945 ), succeeded him as Duke of Norfolk.

Political career

Fitzalan - Howard turned to soon after his coming of age of politics. That followed not only from his hereditary dignity of Earl Marshal of England, but also corresponded to his own intentions. He was Lord Lieutenant of Sussex, was mayor both of Sheffield, of Westminster as well as from his home town of Arundel. In the Conservative government of British Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne - Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury, he was from 1895 to 1900 Postmaster ( Postmaster General ).
